Immersive Tour Launches in East Siskiyou

This week Discover Siskiyou, Travel Oregon and Discover Klamath celebrated a collaborative scope of work resulting in several successful rural tourism projects—one of which launched yesterday.

On behalf of Dorris and Tulelake, and the east region of Siskiyou, and we are proud to announce the release of a free, GPS-enabled audio tour called; The Modoc War: A Homeland Lost. This project combines history, storytelling, technology and recreation, to enhance the visitor experience through 60 miles of important and scenic landmarks, ending at the Lava Beds National Monument, in Tulelake. The Discover Siskiyou Team and Siskiyou Economic Development served as a proud and invested partner in this collaboration to support rural tourism, and cultural preservation on behalf of Dorris and Tulelake, and the east region of Siskiyou.

Similar to a podcast, and cued by your location, this immersive audio tour brings the history of the Modoc War to life, over 105 minutes, across 60 miles, starting at the Klamath Fall’s Museum and ending at Canby’s Cross in the Lava Beds National Monument in east Siskiyou. Over the past year and a half, Discover Siskiyou played a significant role in the production of the audio tour, which is narrated by Cheewa James.

The two-hour audio tour guides visitors on a journey through two states, California and Oregon, and tells the story of the Modoc War, an armed conflict between the Native American Modoc people and the U.S. Army from 1872 to 1873. While driving through the Klamath and Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuges, Petroglyph Point, Hospital Rock, Captain Jack’s Stronghold, and Canby’s Cross, visitors will get a chance to sightsee and learn how the war shaped the present-day eastern Siskiyou, the northernmost region of California, and Southern Oregon.

“We’re excited to give visitors this unique opportunity to learn about the history of our region in a firsthand type of experience,” said Megan Peterson, creative content manager at Discover Siskiyou who spearheaded the writing of the tour. “As you drive through the sites and listen to the narrative, you really start seeing the events and landscapes along the way come to life.”
