RERC Planning and Workshop Results Are Available

YREKA, Calif., January 17, 2023— The Siskiyou Economic Development Council assisted the City of Yreka with the preparation and planning of a two-day Recreation Economies for Rural Communities (RERC) workshop on June 23rd and 24th. The planning and workshop focused on Outdoor Recreation opportunities with potential to contribute to the livelihood of Yreka’s economy, including support of small businesses, tourism and workforce attraction.

The planning and community input process was complied into the Yreka RERC Action Plan and Appendices A-F which serve as a document to share insights and contributions from local stakeholders and community members. The plan illustrates workshop and community feedback and includes a set of specific actions—complete with initial steps and timeframes, lead and support roles, and measures of success—to inform recreation economy development in Yreka over the next two to three years.

The Action Plan and Appendices focus on the following;

Grow Yreka’s Downtown Amenities: Make Yreka’s Main Street a vibrant community gathering space and hub to support outdoor recreation and local businesses.

Enhance Connections to Outdoor Recreation for All: Address physical and informational barriers to accessing local outdoor recreation for community members of all ages to promote a healthy, safe, amenity-rich quality of life.

Inspire Community Pride & Identity: Build off existing regional promotional efforts to carve out a unique celebration of Yreka’s natural, recreational, cultural, and historical assets as a destination and hub of activity.

Catalyze Business & Entrepreneur Development: Attract, engage, and grow businesses in Yreka that support the outdoor recreation sector.

The Siskiyou EDC recognizes the comprehensive community input process involved in its creation, and appreciates the use of the plan for inspiration and guidance for planning and improvement of assets that support business retention, sales and growth.

Several federal partners extended their support of Yreka’s planning process in 2022. The City was one of 25 cities to receive RERC technical assistance.
